OVERVIEW
Problem Statement
It's hard for people to build healthy habits, even with the help of great technology and coaches that our platform offers. How can we best align what we want users to do with what users are willing to do?
Ava is a health tech company that owns a scalable B2B2C platform that provides nutrition and coaching recommendations for weight loss and chronic conditions related to diet. Before I was onboard, the company had launched an MVP version and successfully build partnerships with a few big food companies to offer customers nutritional services. My job is to redesign the app to bring more user engagement, prioritized based on the developing effort of changing the existing functions.

REFLECTION
Bring the Design Impact
As the solo and also the first product designer in the start-up, I have a bigger ownership of the product, and also bigger responsibility to bring the value of user-centered design. By introducing personas, user journey, design conventions, and many other knowledge I gained from sheer amount of practice, I successfully conveyed my design rationals and convinced the team to "buy" my design. I realized that I actually have a bigger voice through good communication.
Be a More-than-user-centered Designer
I was trained to be an advocate for users. However, there's always a gap between the ideal UX and the realistic UX. A good designer is also a good team player, who can make design compromises based on the ultimate goal. I need to align what the platforms want, what our partners want and what the end-users want. By showing design alternatives in different phases, I first bring awareness of what the ideal product should be, and also show what we can do right now.
